My Father was a lettering artist and from a very young age I was exposed to ‘precise drawing skills’. In the days before computers mistakes meant that work had to be completely redone, which led artists to set themselves a very high standard or endlessly redo their work under strict time pressures. I grew up with those standards which I maintain to this day.

At 12 years old my father died and I was taken under the wing of Gerald Merfeld, a Colorado artist. Gerry taught me about the range of colours by creating endless colour charts incorporating tone, values and composition, and constantly training the eye which is the core of drawing. I studied at American Academy of Art and continued to train with Gerald to improve my skills until I took up an apprenticeship as a fashion illustrator at Heinemann Advertising Agency, Chicago Illinois, in 1974. Fashion became my world, I loved illustrating for fashion buyers in retail advertising for family run business Madigans, which had a flagship of five department stores and freelancing for Merchandise Mart. I moved to London in 1986 and launched myself as a storyboard artist with London Advertising Agencies before starting a family 1990. I have never stopped drawing.

LIVE EVENTS

I have always drawn people from an early age. I was encouraged by my former boss/friend in the US, Susan Ruff Deacon who introduced me to Rosemary Fanti, an award winning Chicago fashion illustrator. Rosemary kindly gave me a wealth of advice about working as a live sketch artist. I have launched myself as a live sketch artist. I love the fun lively social engagement whilst drawing my clients who are all beautifully dressed for the happy occasion.

Illustrating people, capturing their likeness on paper, bringing out their true beauty as we interact and they watch me illustrate. The clothes, the pose, the glamour of it all is the best buzz in life for me!
